PREP and PRESENTATION NOTES
- Dried fruits and nuts may be substituted for the chocolate chips in this delicious bread.
INGREDIENTS
Prepare
- oil, for bowl
- 2 T yeast
- 1/4 C water, warm (105-115 degrees F)
- 3/4 C milk, scalded
- 1/3 C butter
- 1/4 C sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 3 1/2 C flour
- 6 oz chocolate chips
- 1/2 C walnuts, chopped (optional)
- 1 egg, beaten
- Topping
- 1 egg, beaten
DIRECTIONS
Prepare
- Grease large bowl, for rising dough.
- Dissolve yeast in water. Set aside.
- Mix together milk, butter, sugar, and salt.
- Beat in eggs and vanilla.
- Stir in yeast.
- Gradually add flour, beating well.
- Knead 8 minutes.
- Place dough in greased bowl, turn once, cover.
- Allow to rise 1 1/2 hours.
- Knead 1 minute.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Roll into 14" x 22" rectangle.
- Sprinkle with chocolate chips and (optional) walnuts.
- Roll into 22" log. Seal seam.
- Form into ring. Seal ends.
- Place on baking sheet, seam side down.
- At 1" intervals, cut 2/3 of the way through the ring, leaving the center intact.
- Gently twist each section.
- Cover. Let rise 1 hour, until doubled.
- Brush top with egg.
- Bake about 25 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees F.
